De-Ionization Water System
“Deionization,” often abbreviated as “DI,” is a water purification process that removes ions from water, rendering it essentially devoid of mineral content. This process is commonly employed in industries where high-purity water is required, such as laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics manufacturing, and power generation.

Process of Deionization:
Deionization typically involves passing water through two types of ion exchange resins cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin.
-
Cation Exchange:
In the first stage, the water passes through a bed of cation exchange resin. This resin contains negatively charged functional groups that attract and exchange positively charged ions (cations) present in the water, such as calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), sodium (Na+), and potassium (K+). These cations are exchanged for hydrogen ions (H+) or other positively charged ions present on the resin. -
Anion Exchange:
After passing through the cation exchange resin, the water then flows through a bed of anion exchange resin. This resin contains positively charged functional groups that attract and exchange negatively charged ions (anions) present in the water, such as chloride (Cl-), sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), and carbonate (CO32-). These anions are exchanged for hydroxide ions (OH-) or other negatively charged ions present on the resin.
As a result of these ion exchange processes, the water exiting the deionization system is stripped of almost all ions, resulting in highly purified water.
Applications of Deionization:
-
Laboratory Use:
Deionized water is commonly used in laboratories for various applications, including preparing solutions, rinsing glassware, and conducting experiments where precise control over water quality is necessary. -
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing:
Deionized water is a critical component in pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, where water purity is essential to ensure the quality and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. -
Electronics Manufacturing:
Deionized water is used extensively in electronics manufacturing for cleaning electronic components, circuit boards, and semiconductor wafers, as well as in cooling systems to prevent mineral buildup and corrosion. -
Power Generation:
Deionized water is used in power generation facilities, particularly in steam turbines and boiler feedwater systems, to prevent mineral deposits and corrosion that can affect equipment performance and efficiency. -
Cosmetics and Personal Care Products:
Deionized water is used in the production of cosmetics and personal care products to ensure product stability, consistency, and purity. -
Chemical Industry:
Deionized water is utilized in various chemical processes, such as diluting concentrated solutions, conducting chemical reactions, and as a solvent in analytical techniques.
A mixed bed is a type of water treatment system used for achieving high-purity water by removing both cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions) simultaneously. This process is widely employed in industries requiring ultra-pure water, such as semiconductor manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, and power generation.
